Modified Console Characters PAK editing is frowned upon by some people but I guarantee that 80% of players are using some kind of modified PAK, it's common practice. Personally I don't have a problem with modified sounds or console characters as long as there are no genuine cheats like spiked models, etc. The basic Quake2 console characters are poor in my opinion. Un-bordered text isn't that easy to read so I use modified characters. This character set also gives you special coloured blocks and symbols which you can use to craft very attractive and visible binds :). See below for an example: Ordinary:

Coloured Blocks Example:
See what I mean. The beauty of it is that these characters are very easy to set up. Here goes: 1. Download and Install the PAK Explorer from here. [NOTE: If you already have a pak9.pak then make any adjustments to that file, otherwise modify the existing pak0.pak file.] 2. Backup the pak0.pak file in your Quake2/baseq2 directory. 3. Load up PAK Explorer, select Open and navigate to your Quake2/baseq2 directory and select pak0.pak. 4. It will appear and you can see the structure of the PAK. Have a nosy through then open the pics directory where you will find a file called conchars.pcx. 5. Now then, here's where you need my help :). Download my own modified file from here. I can't remember who gave me mine. I think it was someone in HooD after I joined, probably Railden, but I've brightened it up myself even more since then. 6. Now, after extracting it, you can simply copy the conchars.pcx file from wherever you downloaded it to, straight into the directory in PAK Explorer. Just drag it in. It will ask for confirmation to overwrite the original but just accept it. 7. You can now close PAK Explorer, the job's a good 'un :). Boot up Quake2 and type some text to see if it's worked. Any problems at all then restore your backup copy. |
