Combat 1. Respect One thing a lot of players do as they improve is begin to get over-confident and disrespectful of other players' skills. This can make you charge people down as if they haven't got a chance of hitting you, you the quake-god :) . I think this affects most decent players to some extent, including me. The way to overcome this and vastly improve your scores is to treat every opponent as if they're Fatality or Zero4 or Thresh or someone. This needs more concentration as you need to play with your best skills in all situations. However, the upshot is that playing your best will become the norm and turn you into a far better player. 2. Armour A lot of players underestimate the importance of armour, but it really is vital. An armoured-up player can survive a point blank rail shot and will also suffer far less damage from explosions. It will also let you rocket jump around more which is so vital in Quake 3. Collect armour shards and especially the red/yellow armour. Remember that rail shots knock 100 off your health so make sure you're topped up with health and armour so you aren't raildeadable. When you come out of the water on The Edge for example, get the four healths or the four armour shards up with the rockets. This means that any railer will have to hit you at least twice (an extra life if you like). 3. Use the Right Weapon This sounds very obvious but it's very easy to get obsessed by one particular weapon and to try to use it in every situation. Good players use the entire arsenal to their maximum advantage. The railgun is clearly a long-distance sniper's tool. With a lot of practice it can also be used at medium or short range but the thing to bear in mind is that if you miss, you'll probably die :). The rocket launcher is a great all-round weapon for mid to long range but you need to be careful using it up close as you take a lot of splash damage yourself. Try to jump backwards as you fire to minimise the damage at close range. The super shotgun is a fantastic close range weapon, probably the best as the spread and damage are deadly. The chaingun is also deadly at all ranges. Remember to use these weapons as finishing tools. Don't try to rail someone twice, just whip out your finishing weapon after the first and make life easy for yourself. The grenade launcher is the best tool for breaking up a crowd of players and the grenades are good if you hold onto them before releasing them because attacking players tend to get scared and back off which can give you chance to escape. 4. Be Inquisitive When you hear other players scrapping, head for them and try to take them both out, they'll both be weakened and concentrating on each other which makes them perfect targets. 5. Crowd Dynamics In the Awareness section I discussed hot-spots. I was simplifying this concept a lot, though. There's far more to this than simply knowing busy areas. You will learn with experience how games develop and learn about how strong/weak players react to different situations. This is the key to dominating a server. Another aspect of this is knowing which players to attack first. Generally you want to attack the guy with the best weapon as he's the biggest threat. However, if you're aware of a very unhealthy player then they represent the best chance of a quick frag and should be targeted first. When you're in the middle of a crowd try to get to the fringes as soon as you can. The guy in the middle is the one everyone else will be aiming at. You don't want to be that guy :). 6. Prediction/Counter-Prediction I mentioned this in the Aiming section and it is another vital part of combat. Half-decent opponents will try to track you and lead their aiming on you, as you would to them. To counter this you need to set them up and be as unpredictable as possible. Forsaking vital health packs or armour, standing still for a second, doubling back and running straight at a tooled up opponent, anything to surprise him and hopefully keep you in control. An advanced technique is predicting your opponents prediction :). This can help you to be tricky. One trick I use sometimes is where I see my opponent out of the corner of my eye but I don't turn to face him, I just continue on my way. He tends to follow or head you off but you'll be ready for him. 7. Know when to Retreat It's tempting to go running into every combat situation with a carefree attitude, as if you're invincible, but you *must* try to overcome this. It's something that we all do but great players know when the odds are too slim and when to make a retreat to tool up and grab health. 8. Quad In both games the route to the top of the scoreboard is domination of the quad damage. A lot of players, including myself, time the quad when it's picked up and I try to get back to it in time for the spawn. You have to use some judgement in this though. When I was on a modem and the server was full of LPBs I had no qualms about "whoring" the quad. You need some playing advantage to make up for their connection advantage. Now I have ISDN though I think it's a little lame to time the quad to be honest (I frequently overcome this moral dilemma though). Also, if you're on a server with some newbies, is it really fair to time the quad when you know they won't be doing the same. I don't think so. You can find various weapon/item timers in my resources section. 9. Herding When you're in a one on one combat situation and you think your opponent may be about to leg it - try to herd him in by firing at his exits and gradually firing closer and closer to him. 10. Fire and Hope This perhaps isn't a skillful tactic :) but it does demonstrate an understanding of the map. For example, on the Edge players are continually running to get the lower rocket launcher. If you fire at the entrance from up near the megahealth room for example, you're likely to hit someone on a busy server. So, whilst you haven't aimed and hit them you've strategically calculated a likely hit. Hehe, that's one way to explain away spamming ;). 11. Attacking/Bully Boy Tactics You should keep the object of the game in mind and go all out for the maximum number of frags possible - head for busy areas, pick on feeble opponents, whilst preferably avoiding the top players if you can - just like a bully. If you're losing you might have to start playing cheaply :). By this I mean some last minute quad whorage (this is the term used to describe players who time the quad and don't let anyone else use it), or maybe some grenade spam into a crowd or even, if you're desperate, some BFG lameness :).
