Attitude 1. Camping Anyone who denies ever camping, even briefly, is, I'm afraid, a liar, plain and simple. I sometimes hang around a weapon area if I know it's about to spawn - so does everyone else. In the strictest sense this is a form of camping. What I do disagree with, though, is those players who collect the weapon, and then stay there attacking anyone who tries to come and get it. The best example of this is players who grab the railgun on Q2DM3 then hang around at the top of the lift and fire at everyone who tries to jump across.
It could be said to be a valid tactic because you're dominating busy areas but I honestly don't think it's part of the spirit of a deathmatch to stand still. Every player is free to the play the game in any way they choose of course, however, in my opinion camping is very lame. I think players should keep moving all the way through the game. If you're stood still for more than a few seconds, you're verging on being a despicable camper :)
The very worst campers are respawn campers - these players simply collect the super shotgun and stand next to the same respawn point blowing defenseless respawned players away. This isn't as frequent in Quake 3 because players spawn with more health and so aren't killable in one shot as they are in Q2. Also, the respawn points aren't as clear and there are more of them. In Q2 it was the ultimate lame tactic. Having said that, I don't deny letting my railgun crosshair stray over respawn areas as I run past, but this isn't the same as systematically picking a respawn and standing there. I wrote a cynical column on this which you can read here (9 April 2000 - The Best Laid Plans). 2. BFG This is a contentious issue. The fact that the weapon is in the game means, by definition that it is supposed to be used. If the server administrator wanted it removed, they could do this. Also, if you aren't using it, you can be sure that someone else will. Personally, I don't like the BFG, I think it was a mistake in both games. In Quake 3 it's way, way too powerful and the projectiles are so fast as to be unavoidable. At least the Quake 2 BFG has to warm up, but even then a quadded BFG can ruin a perfect CTF defence in a matter of seconds. In Quake 3, the only thing that compensates for its power is the scarcity of BFG cells and the fact that it's generally located in a vulnerable area (Q3DM11 moving platform for example). In Deathmatch games I try not to use it, but if everyone else is you'll fall behind if you don't jump on the same bandwagon. It is quite depressing though when playing Q3DM12, seeing tens of players tooled up with such a powerful weapon. 3. Lagged Players If you can see a lagged player, two things go through your mind. On the one hand you know that shooting a defenseless player is cowardly and unsporting, but on the other hand you know that if you don't take the easy frag then someone else will. Some players get really annoyed about this but personally, when I was a HPB, I didn't expect to still be alive when I finished lagging, it's just hard luck I'm afraid. Try not to if you can help it but if it's a busy server, or if you can't get past (hehe) - put them out of their misery. <evil laugh continues> 4. Be Cool I don't mean in a Fonz kind of way (if he can still be called cool :o/ ). Rather, I mean be decent with people and try to not to use the shield of your online anonymity as an excuse to turn into a foul-mouthed yob. You get some players who come on a server venting all their life's frustrations. Swearing at players, accusing them of cheating, generally being a spoilt brat. It's a game. Don't take it too seriously. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose - Live with it and realise that you there's always someone better than you.
