Net Speak Glossary

I remember when I first started out, there were loads of net abbreviations I didn't understand so here I've compiled a list of the more common ones:

ggGood Game - Said after almost every game really unless a cheat or camper wins :).
heheLaughter. See ":)" below.
lolLots of Laughter - More emphatic version of above.
rofl(mao)Roll on Floor Laughing (My Arse Off) - Even more emphatic.
brbBe Right Back.
bblBe Back Later.
m8Mate/Friend.
n1Nice One.
cyaSee you/Goodbye.
gs/nsGood shot/Nice shot - It's polite to say this if you get killed well.
loHello/Hi.
irlIn real life.
atmAt the moment.
afaikAs far as I know.
btwBy the way.
iircIf I recall correctly.
tbhTo be honest.
pplPeople.
:PTongue Out - When being cheeky :).
:)Smile - The most common bind on the servers and one that can be taken the wrong way sometimes. Some people object to being "smiled at" after being killed :).
:))Big Smile.
:(Sadness.
;)Wink. Useful because sarcasm doesn't work too well with text and it's best to remind people when you're joking unless you want them to take offense.
fs/ffs/foF*cks Sake/For f*cks sake/F*ck off.
l33tElite - Many meanings really. Can mean a top/skillful player or clan (team). Can also be applied to someone with a lot of knowledge of Quake or net things. It can have (most commonly) negative connotations and suggests that a person/player is unpleasant and arrogant.
lamer/llamaRubbish or annoying person/player.

L33t Speak

Another aspect of net speak is l33t speak, which involves the use of numbers or even strange foreign charcters to make text more interesting (and more difficult to read). For example, l33t sp34k, or r3v1ll4 for my name :). Be careful when using this though, you can end up looking a pratt ;).

On RookieToo's site there's a good l33t sp43k generator where you can type a phrase in normal English and get the l33t equivalent (and an even l33er version too). Check it out here.
