Antivir - This is an excellent and free anti-virus program, which includes regular online updates. Highly recommended.

Gozilla - Mods and maps and other Quake downloads can be massive so you're best off using this download program which lets you automatically resume downloads if you're cut off (even if you reboot). The price is an annoying advertising banner while you use it but that's easy to ignore.

Internet Query Tools - Using this site you can get information on domain names and IP addresses. This is mainly for more advanced users but could come in useful.
