Introduction

One of the great things about Quake 2 demos is the fact they can be edited, soundtracks can be added, etc. and you can make a great demo. Unfortunately there's no such thing as Keygrip for Quake 3 so people have had to do it another way, by making movies. This page was set up to rate some of the early ones back in 2001 but there have been many more since then so a lot of these are out of date. But anyway, I'll leave it up. You'll obviously need an up-to-date version of Windows Media Player and RealPlayer to watch these things :). I've had problems with one or other program when watching certain movies, but one of them usually works! Also, you will need an up-to-date version of the Divx codec, which you can download from my site, here. And if you're feeling ambitious or want to try to make a movie for yourself, here's a short instruction document that I plucked from Challenge-TV.

Note (26/11/02) : Apologies, but while I have been neglecting my site (over a year now), many of the links below have died. I rarely update this site anymore, but this came to my attention on a forum. Anyway, sorry, I wish I could host them, but I wouldn't even get one of them onto the space I have :). If you can't access any of them I would recommend checking the best Movie site, which is the German Planetquake Movie site for most of these movies. I was going to link their download pages, but even they're having hosting problems at the moment so I'll just reference the filename where the link is now dead so that hopefully you can find it :O(. Poor I know.

BiO Movie - Hires Version (70 Mb)
[ 9.5 ]
Clan Bring It On's movie is easily the most technically outstanding and original Quake movie that I've seen so far. It has a very psychodelic rave feel to it and music to match. The creator, Liquid, has made great use of blurring, colour enhancement, and flashing imagery to make this a real Quake rave movie :). Unlike a lot of the other movies it doesn't feature "great" frags as such, just some very good play glossed up so it looks more amazing than any other video. Some scenes have been made to look really gritty and realistic looking, others are blurred so much you only get a feel for the action going on. This is a stunning piece of work and an absolute must download. The sheer artistic talent and imagination that Liquid has shown will be very hard to beat.

Clanbase - Eurocup 3 - The Movie (23Mb/107Mb)
[ 9.2 ]
This is nothing short of stunning. There are two versions, a high-res (107Mb) and 23 Mb lo-res (23Mb). I recommend going the whole hog and getting the high-res version. You'll only end up having to download it twice if you go for the small version. I did :). It lasts over 12 minutes beginning with some Q3 fragging, from individual players like proZac, Polosatiy, Toxic, etc. and then cutting to some general scenes to show you the atmosphere behind the scenes. Next up is a CS section with a truly amazing sequence where e.Zetor takes down five players all in one go with some amazing accuracy and nerve. The movie then concludes with the exciting end to the match between the competition winners, Unmatched, and the runners-up, Ice Climbers. The whole demo is extremely well polished with perfectly suited music, superb fragging scenes, and altered sound effects to really make the movie exciting. The demo captures the frenetic atmosphere of the tournament perfectly and is an absolute "must" download.

Clan Exclamation (80 Mb) (search clan!.zip)
[ 9.0 ]

This is an excellent movie and uses several imaginative ideas including video in video, which is the first movie I've seen it in so far. There's also a large amount of subliminal imagery going on including a recurring picture of a kitten, ahem? There's some other slick artistic effects too with superimposed imagery. The movie is basically trying to portray a kind of rough and "street-like" feel, and it succeeds.

! are regular practice partners of MKC so I had a sneaking concern that we might be the frag bait for some of their top frags ;). Unfortunately I was proved right and you see me die three times, hehe. [!.part] has put this movie together and stars in most of the scenes and he's done a really good job of coming up with something new. The music is cool, the direction is slick and the frags are very special. Get it downloaded.

ClipQuake (46 Mb) (search clipquake.avi)
[ 8.6 ]

This demo starts with some brilliantly atmospheric and moving music which really builds up the tension for the inevitable frag fest that follows. The religious, monastic-sounding music is what makes this demo special somehow. It begins with some sweeping shots of areas of the maps and a player making some difficult jumps. The meat of the demo though is a sequence of top frags, with top play from Blokey, Lakerman, PANICORE, etc. I've watched this several times and it's pretty much faultless except for the fact that it only lasts 3 minutes :). Superb piece of work and I challenge you to watch this and not be "affected" by the music ;).

(Btw, if you want the music, it's "The Patriot Trailer (Escape) by John Williams". There's also a remix by Craig Armstrong, which is cool.)

aYb RA3 Movie - Version 2 (93 Mb) (search aYb-ra3-clip-part_II-[DivX4-640x480].avi)
[ 8.5 ]
Some amazing rocket skills are on show here from the top German RA3 clan, All Your Base. It starts off like Clipquake, with some sweeping shots of the arenas but then the thrash metal kicks in and the kills start to mount. The shots are nothing short of outstanding with a lot of precise air rockets including a double air rocket at one point. As an RA3 player, it's really great to see some inspiring play on the RA3 maps. Apparently there was an early movie with less action, but that criticism certainly can't be levelled at this effort as they've packed it full of action and inpirational skills.

RA3 Forever (80Mb) (search Ra3-Forever.avi)
[ 8.4 ]

This movie is by the creator of the aYb movie and has been dedicated to Germany's Planetquake, from where I've found some of the movies on this page. This movie is very similar to the aYb movie in that it concentrates on RA3 fragging skills, but not just from aYb this time. It's a decent length, at 8 minutes and is played out to two rock tracks. There's some excellent synching with the music too including some clever bits where the action is speeded up it tune to the music. The frags are stunning, with mid-air rockets galore, as was the hallmark of the "other" movie.

This is well worth downloading, though the creator, Vader, should maybe consider adding to the action with some more effects as per the BiO movie, or Clan Exclamation's. Great work though.

Clan Defiance (40 Mb) (200 Mb Hires) (search defiance_movie_lowq.zip / defiance_movie.zip)
[ 8.1 ]

At the time of writing this is the largest file I've ever downloaded and on my ISDN connection it took a good few hours. Was it worth it? Well, yes and no. The demo is similar in many ways to several others and a standard format seems to be asserting itself. Some sweeping shots of the levels, some in black and white, followed by the frags to some rock/metal music and then the credits. This demo is just like that but it feels different because it's a bit more mellow than some of the other demos, which is a good thing. The demo itself lasts almost 7 minutes, which isn't long, so presumably the quality of the music (high) has caused this.

There are some good skills on show from this, one of the best UK RA3 clans, and it's a very honest demo. There's only one obvious set up where a player jumps off the roof on the castle map and gets killed by cross mid-air railgun fire before he hits the ground, but it looks great so why not? There is also some imaginative direction with a sweeping shot over the castle walls which then descends on the Defiance team lightning gunning some poor lone player. It really does look good. And there's some good stuff on show from a praccy with fellow UK clan, Exclamation, with a good sequence of lightning fire on !.Dan and then some sweet rails from Caned. The creator has also done an excellent job of synching the music to the action and it gels very nicely indeed.

All in all I really like the demo, and find the mellow music and feel very refreshing. However, the size of the large version is a lot for what you get to be honest. It makes you expect something far longer. It's a good demo and definitely worth downloading, just go for the smaller version if you don't have broadband.

Clan 129 (66 Mb)
[ 7.9 ]
This 5-minute movie is, obviously enough, by Clan 129, a German DM and RA3 clan. Most of the clips are from RA3 though, which is great. Unfortunately this demo isn't a patch on the aYb demo above but it's good all the same. It goes for the same effect with some thrash metal music to accompany the frags. The frags themselves are very good of course, but not as stunning as aYb's :). Another problem is that although the demo lasts five minutes, the credits take up two :). However, the credits run to some really funny music, which will crack you up. All in all it's a good demo and well worth the download, but hopefully Clan 129 will follow it up with a fuller affair.

Great Frags (23 Mb) (search gr8frags.avi)
[ 7.7 ]
This is the first Quake movie I saw and it's still a class effort. It's a collection of, obviously enough, great frags! The music track is perfect and the demo is very slickly put together. There's about six fragging sessions, and it only lasts 2 minutes but it's very entertaining all the same. It makes cool use of slow-motion to really show the skills off. One of the best sequences is where ic-PANICORE takes down three members of All*Stars with a stunning mid-air rocket at the end. Other highlights include Blue's and Fatality's frags. My version of the demo seems to cut short strangely at the end, but other than that it's very well put together. If you have any problems with the above link then do a search on "gr8frags.avi".

<10>

Frags Done Extreme (22 Mb)
[ 7.6 ]
This is a cool Quakeworld movie. Unfortunately, I never played much QW but this demo shows some of the fantastic rocket bouncing, instant weapon-switching madness that goes on :). There's a cool sequence where one player takes down six others, with a little help from the invulnerability.

<11>

Clan Execution - A History (26 Mb) (search cEq3Avi.avi)
[ 7.5 ]
Another cool demo. This one supposedly charts the history of this South African clan, but really it's just an excuse for three minutes of cool fragging. It starts out with some bumbling play to the sounds of Coldplay - Trouble, but then the rockier music kicks in and with it some real skills are put on show. You get to see the new Q3 spiraling rail in all it's glory and a several great shots, including an amazing prediction rocket shot on Q3DM17 where someone's jumping to the quad. Amazing. There's also an odd bit in the middle where the whole team jump on each others shoulders on Q3DM17 and fire all their weapons. Bit strange, but it's an entertaining demo.

64K Demos

There's a particular challenge in demo circles of creating a fantastic demo, with various scenes, rendered graphics and a thumping soundtrack in only 64K of space. This is done by some amazing compression routines and the results are astounding. Here are three of my favourites, so download them (they're only 64Kb!).
