^ Acura Who?

Sorry for the delay in updating... We played Acura in our second UKCCL Free League game this week. We'd heard rumours the week before. Some said CS had folded. Others said CS and FED had merged. It turned out that the reality was kind of a mix of the rumours, which is often the case in real life - hehe.

Acura is a new clan of very good players from both the aforementioned clans and Tres from PK. Clearly, this clan has formed due to many of those same players playing together in the UK DM Squad as a few of them do, and realising the potential for a new clan to challenge CS. To be honest, I see it as a good thing. CS' utter domination of the leagues is admirable, but ultimately quite boring because you ask yourself what the Division 1 clans are playing for exactly, except to stay up :). Acura should bring a breath of fresh air, if they aren't one of these clans that form with glory ambitions and fold a couple of days after their first loss. I hope not.

Anyway, back to the point. MKC played them on Wednesday in their inaugural match. We had actually played a few practice games with them on Monday night, which were very good fun. I'm not going to post details of practice games, of course, but sufficed to say, we were impressed ;).

Having said that, they are new and, on paper, we stood a chance of beating them on Q2DM5, because it's quite an obscure map, and not one that clans readily practice. We also had the advantage of having played the UK's best, CS, on the very same map just two days prior. Sadly, Acura were too much for us. They had two players playing from an internet cafe so they were pinging below 20, whereas we had Lup and Kaa on dodgy Cable connections. However, I take nothing away from Acura because they played brilliantly and completely swamped the tactics we were trying to implement. We were well aware that they would be all over the Quad/Rail area and we had three players trying to cover it, but even that wasn't enough to stop them.

For us, it means two losses in the Free League, whereas they now face CS in next week's game on, get this, The Edge :). Should be a classic, I just hope Vince posts a demo.

Speaking of which, my spectator demo of the game was useless because I was disconnected half-way through, however, Vince posted a load of demos on the UKCCL site so I recommend downloading his from here.

^ CS Again

Played them last week, they won. Played them this week and, guess what, they won again. Ah well those are the hardest games out of the way. The others should be like gentle strolls in the park in comparison. No offence to anyone there - hehe!

Despite several games' worth of practice against more than one clan, we couldn't cope with CS' superb railing skills around the Quad Area. I got a lucky spawn and started in my position of Red Armour room but unfortunately I lost it to CS about five minutes in when they stormed the room with the Quad. After that, with thorough domination of the Rail Room keeping us from the quad, they locked it down. We did get a couple of quads I think but escaping without being railed was the big problem for the quad guys. GG anyway and well played all round, despite losing :(.

I was supposed to be in the Red Armour room, but that went a bit pear shaped :), so don't expect a textbook example of how to play The Pits from this demo ;). [26/09/00: Sorry but my initial demo upload had an error mid-way through. I've fixed it with Splitdem so it's fine now]

^ A Week in the Life

It's been a very eventful week for MKC because the UKCCL has kicked off again and we actually have something to do! It can genuinely feel quite pointless practising for non-existant matches sometimes so it's great to get a chance to pit ourselves against the best in Division 1. As you'll have read below (I hope) we managed one win in the Mixed League and one loss in the Free League. The loss was to the best Q2 clan in modern times (i.e. this last year - hehe), so that's not much of a shock.

We've joined the new Barrysworld Q2 Free League which is a new challenge and should be interesting. The draw for the division placings will take place tonight. To be honest, I don't mind which division we start in. There's a lot of fun to be had in the lower divisions ;). We'll find out soon anyway. We didn't bother with the Mixed League because our modemer situation is once again becoming problematic. We now only have two active HPB's, myself and Toadkilla. So, if any experienced modemers are interested in joining please mail me for a trial.

If you're a clan leader and are interested in playing a friendly with us, you can either mail me or find us in #clanmkc. We always have a server booked on Thursday and Sunday evening and we have our own for any impromptu games so get in touch if you're interested. We aren't l33t fools or gloaters or bad losers so you could do worse ;).

Elsewhere in MKC land we're still playing in the Barrysworld Unreal Tournament League. We have a small but dedicated squad and have had a brilliant start to our second season with five wins out of six maps played, which leaves us second in Division 3. Check out the newly designed MKC UT site for more information and some very well written reports, better than mine anyway, hehe. Yada yada yada, I woulda got away with it too, if it hadn't been for that pesky Spiritos :).

On the Quake 3 front we'll be embarking on the new Rocket Arena 3 League soon as well, though we have to get through the cup stage to decide our initial placing.

That's it for now, on Monday we'll be up against CS on Q2DM5, and on Wednesday we face TA on the same map. Wish us luck :).
