2004 - Scandinavian Duel Tour
I've updated the Old-School
Clans page with an obvious omission, Clan Stealth. I've also
added a history of Suicide Squad, written by Just Ade. It was on
their old site which has now been taken down and is an interesting
look back at both the clan and the early scene. I've also made a
small update of the Quake 2 History to bring it up to date with
the season results shown on Savage and Q2 Central. Other updates
include a spring clean on the links, especially seeing as two major
sites now have new names - Quakenation = Quadnation and Barrysworld
= Freddyshouse, but I've added a few more as well, including the
excellent discussion/blog site of old-school Quake 2 clan Eat
Electric Death.
Demoswise, I have uploaded a couple of demos from the
recently concluded Scandinavian
Duel Tour, but you can find a load yourself on their site :).
mikko was the eventual winner of Season 2, beating purri in the
final. Shows what I know, I thought provi would win after seeing
his last 16 demo vs dimmu. There's also another competition kicking
off in the still-vibrant Nordic scene and that's a new Invitational
event featuring the best Nordic and Polish players, which is one
to follow over the coming weeks.

2004 - Glutton for Punishment
First
update of the new year and a fresh page to fill. Lately I've been
back online a bit more and enjoying a return to some casual Quake
2 deathmatch. The Wup Ass is strictly tongue-in-cheek by the way,
because I'm god awful now :). Quake 2 refuses to die, which is great
to see and there's yet another new league over on Savage. Server-wise,
Clan EAT's Fuster's
Deathmatch seems to be the server to be on in the UK, and you
get a good game there with some decent players. I've been playing
every now and again under an old nick seeing as REViLLA is over
two years dead. It's been fun to get into again and I've been enjoying
everything I always loved about deathmatch.
You would think that after so many years playing it
I would be sick of the sight of the game by now, but that never
seems to happen to me. Certainly, if I had a better computer than
a P2-450 and a better connection than a Diamond SupraExpress modem,
then I'd be playing Quake 3 or BF1942, or whatever the current game
is, but I don't, so I have to make do with Quake 2 deathmatch for
my online fix.
What is it about the game that still inspires? A number
of things really. There's still the raw competitive challenge of
trying to top the board and I find it all the more entertaining
since I'm one of the few modemers now and get a real buzz each time
I beat LPB's in a game. But I also enjoy the individual challenges
within a game. When I get hit by an unashamed camper, I always go
gunning for them as soon as I spawn.
For me, it's also due to the way I play the game. Although
I do aim to win, I've never really played the game in the right
way to do that consistently because I prefer to play the game in
a fun, eccentric way, going for wild and difficult shots. I like
jumping off ledges and spinning to do a mid-air rail (when they
come off). Or I prefer lobbing grenades through windows when I know
someone's there, all the time wasting valuable fragging time. I
also find it hard to switch from the railgun when I know full well
the rocket launcher and super shotgun are the combo I should be
using as a HPB.
But it's also all the funny moments during a game and
it can always surprise you with something that you've never seen
before. Killing yourself with grenades or spawning to be hit with
a grenade or rocket that you yourself fired so you kill yourself
from the grave. Or getting crushed on The Pits or Frag Pipe. Small
things I suppose :).
Anyway, it's not dead yet, not bad for a six year old
game!
