March 2000 Archive
31 March 2000 - My eyes!! No, this isn't in preparation for an April Fool. The orange has seen its last day. Personally, I liked it because it made the site quite unique imo. Anyway, it's now blue - so get used to it :-) I think it's pretty nice looking. I'm also working on the merger of my old Quake 2 site and this one. I won't be fetching everything over to the new site, it's not worth it. Once I've finished work on this I will effectively shut the old site down. I'm also thinking of starting a new hit counter, combining the old hits with hits on the new site :)
26 March 2000 - Site of the Week OK, a new section in the Links area is the SoW. Whether I update this every week remains to be seen but I'll have a go ;). These sites will all be online gaming related because those are the only sites I look at, oh yes. I would also like to ask again for any comments on the site - especially the tips/map guide I've just published. I want to be sure that SHAFT! isn't my only reader - hehe.
25 March 2000 - Massive Killing Capacity Well, after dithering over a possible return to Quake 2 I've done it and joined top clan MKC. MKC was one of the clans that appealed to me most because they're a top side with some great talent but they're also sound players and can't be regarded as l33t in any way. So. I'm happy. I joined after playing in an internal praccy session with them that lasted over 5 maps! This impressed me because HooD never seemed to have the players to have internal practices and as for five maps, hehe no chance. That kind of enthusiasm left me in no doubt. As far as XC is concerned I am very concerned :) We had a match in the Barrysworld DM league this week and could only field three. There's just no enthusiasm at all and I spent literally 30 minutes trying to coax the irc idlers to play, which fell on deaf ears. Oh well. On the site front I've been tidying up the tips section a bit and I've done the first part of my map guide, covering maps 1 through to 6. I'm quite pleased with it so far, mainly because it gives me an excuse to use loads of screenshots ;) Please write to me at the address below if there's anything you want to see. I'm also toying with the idea of merging in all the old Q2 content off my old site because I might start mentioning Q2 more now that I'm playing Q2 alongside Q3.
19 March 2000 - Must dash Quick update. Omg what a gay word "dash" is ;). Er no that wasn't it. OK I've made a few changes to the site. A new demo, I've also put up the first version of my tips section. It's closely based on the one on my Quake 2 site - in fact some of the text has been lifted directly. However I've tried to tailor it to Quake 3 where appropriate. It needs tidying up. I'd like to see some pictures and I could add some more advanced tips, but it makes a big improvement on the sad tips that were up yesterday :) There are also a couple of resources up in the eXtra section - PS2 Rate and the pre-compiled DLLs for the new point release which improve your frame rate in the game. I'm also giving the Links section a good going over, over the next week, hehe.
18 March 2000 - Nevermind
A few things have happened in the last couple of weeks.
First off I've been testing out Quake 2 to see whether I really
want to play it alongside Quake 3 and maybe join a clan in the UKCCL.
Playing high level matches again certainly does appeal. The problem
is that I find Quake 2 a little bit awkward now. The way Q3 hides
your lag was so infuriating at first but now it feels natural and
"experiencing" lag the old fashioned way isn't nice. That
said, I can still play a decent game even when I go there straight
after a game of Q3. I'm not sure though yet. The big draw as well
is the feel of a rail kill. The rail in Q3 doesn't come close to
the satisfying hit of a well timed Q2 rail.
Clanwise, I've, erm, joined XC, a long-standing QW and now Q3/QW clan. I say "erm" because it doesn't feel as if I've joined at all! I've played quite a few public FFAs, TPs and 2v2s with XC-W4rh0g over recent weeks and it was he who asked me to join their Q3 team a week ago. I deliberated but then decided yeah, why not. The thing is I don't know the others and since my recruitment was made by one person it isn't really all that official, or at least it doesn't seem so. Anyway, putting that to one side, I've played a couple of organised friendlies again which was nice to get back into. The clan itself seems active and the irc channel usually has over 15 people in it. I don't see much enthusiasm for Q3, though, it seems like QW is still holding a strong grip over several of them. I'll see how it goes.
And onto the Barrysworld FFA League. I was lucky not
to be kicked out of this league because my work forced me to miss
the games in both weeks 2 and 3. Missing 2 out of 4 games meant
it was always going to be an uphill struggle and as a result I've
ended up 6th out of 7 overall. I imagine this means relegation for
Season 2 which is a bit annoying really because I played a couple
of storming games. I finished 3rd in both games I played, which
was fine with me given the number of LPBs and the high standard
of opposition. On Thursday I beat one LPB to third and was only
3 frags behind Tango who finished second overall in the league.
I don't deserve to be relegated skill-wise imo but score-wise I
really can't argue :)
On the site front I know this is still poor. I haven't put nearly as much time in on this as I did on my old Quake 2 site. I've reviewed and fully updated my personal biography section and added in some pictures to brighten it up a bit. I'm in the process of porting over and improving upon some of the tips from my old site, but with a Quake 3 focus. The demos section isn't too bad, but 6 or 7 demos isn't exactly a demo-fest. The extras section is stuck there without any real purpose - it's supposed to be for resources and things. The links section is quite nice. I think the mini-pic of each site is quite a novel feature but there are many, many sites I should add. I've also thought to maybe review sites every now and again, maybe exporing areas of sites that are rarely visited or highlighting interesting columns that other people have written..
5 March 2000 - Mumbling Madman Phew, Bigfoot's changed my score in the BWFFA so I no longer look a complete lamer :) I'll still have missed two games though so I'll be looking to come top 3 in the final match to stay in my Division. Played my usual Saturday night BWFFA and had a good laugh. Managed a fifth position in the first game. Very nice. Overwrote my own screenie so I nicked the one off UK Gamer, which also provides some decent coverage of the games each week. (btw killa is not a HPB - I'm the highest :oP) [wishes people would refresh the pings by pressing tab BEFORE taking screenshots :)] I've also put up a new demo which is a storming international team game between top quality players. Find it on my demos page. And, continuing in the tradition of both the HooD and T2C sites which I used to maintain I've whacked up my desktop in the extra section. Partly because I can't think of anything else to put in there and partly, er no that's it. P.S. Mmmm - Just been reading my own site here and it's struck me how me me me it all is. I'll try to put some columns up that actually debate something rather than talking about myself all the time. It'll be hard mind ;)
3 March 2000 - Yip Yip Yip Hehe, might as well kiss my BWFFA chances goodbye. This week I couldn't even make the game because of work (finance department month-end - not nice). And, next week I'll be off on a business trip so I'll miss week 3 as well. That means I've got an inaccurate score of 5 in week 1 (see 26 Feb news) and a score of zero in week 2 and 3. I'll be lucky not to be demoted to Division 5e. Oh well - maybe if I kick off big style in week 4 I can redeem myself ;) I've actually considered going back to Quake 2 this week. I gave it a try and too be honest it came back to me quite quickly, but you get used to Quake 3 tricking you into thinking there's no lag and Quake 2 makes no such effort, so it feels a bit restricted. My play had been improved by Quake 3 no end, aiming, movement and general combat skills were all much enhanced over their pre-Q3 levels so I could probably make a go of it. The reason for this? Simply that HPBs are completely overlooked in Quake 3, in Quake 2 at least clans are clammering for HPB talent and I'm sure I'd be recruited by a decent clan. We'll see whether I go back (at least partly) or stick with the game I genuinely prefer, Quake 3. |
