27 February 2000 - Barrysworld Q3 Mega Game

Had another enjoyable night on the Mega Game server. I improved on my previous performances this week and even manged 8th in one game, which was good. I'm learning some good techniques now - yes you can use strategy. I played the entire night's games thies week and was knackered after them. One new thing was that we played two team play matches which were real pummel fests. Good laugh though. Here are some screenshots :)

These first two games went quite well. I got on the scoreboard in all six games but I was extremely chuffed with game game, where I came 8th out of 40 - nice1.

Q3Dm1 is a great map. You're never alive for more than a few seconds and the game can grind to a halt when you're outside near the rocket launcher so you just have to switch off and fire, fire, fire. Did well on both these maps - though the number of LPBs was quite overwhelming :)

This was something new - teamplay. I thought it might be a bit crap but I was surprised. People didn't kill their own teammates too often, though I had trouble with Masha on my team, in the first game, who kept spraying me with machine gun fire while I was casually waiting for the... er guarding the rocket launcher spawn.

Thoroughly enjoyed all the six matches once again. Great session. Cheers to the BW crew for setting up the monster servers needed to cope with the number of players.

26 February 2000 - Barrysworld Q3 FFA League

FS! So annoying on Thursday. I was well chuffed to get a Division 3 position and was up for my match on Thursday. I've been having trouble with Nildram randomly disconnecting me after 20 minutes or so, so I connected early, had a warm-up and downloaded some CPL demos to keep the connection sweet :) The match started at 8:15 and I was on top form, frequently challenging the LPBs for the top spot and with five minutes to go I was repeatedly changing places with the position 2 guy. Was pleased, and then, wtf? a sudden disconnect. No lag or anything before, just a disconnect! I reconnected as fast as possible (not fast on a modem), re-entered the game and could only rack up five points in the remaining one minute, leaving me, yup, last. So annoying because I would have been second, or third. I asked the admin to consider my pre-connect score and he said he'd pass it on, so I'll have to see whether my score of 5 goes up, or one of 40. Oh well. I complained to Nildram afterwards but no reply yet.

Site-wise I'm still being a lazy get. Redone the links page quite successfully with loads of pictures - websites need pictures I say! Two new demos up, both from the recent CPL event in London. A total of six - not that impressive but give me chance. I still plan to add resources, tips and above all some more demos.

13 February 2000 - Barrysworld Q3 Mega Game

What's going on? Three updates on three consecutive days? Crazy. <"he must be bored" - reader>. Last night I had another attempt at taking part in the BW Mega Game and it was brilliant fun. The single most intensive deathmatch experience you can have. On the face of it you can be cynical and say "Imagine the worst lag you've ever had. Multiply it by 10. Enter an arena with 40 of the best players in the country, mostly LPB, and slug it out." But that's just being negative :)

I turned up early because these games are very, very popular. A 40 player limit sounds a lot but a lot of people simply couldn't get in once it had started. I rushed to the server the instant the ip was given out so I had no problem. Five maps were played in total though I had trouble with my copy of Quake 3 on the map change to the last map. The action was going on but I couldn't see anything. My goal for the evening was to appear on the scoreboard. That doesn't sound ambitious I know but when you consider the scoreboard only shows 17 out of the total 40 players and as I've said, most are LPB, that's some achievement.

We started out on Q3DM15 which is a nice big map. I got most of my frags by being cheap - taking the GL and spamming that central Rocket Launcher arena :) Hey - you have it to do! I finished just off the scoreboard 19th, which was disappointing.

I fared somewhat better on Q3DM6, the next map. It was extremely manic, especially around the plasma gun, which is where I got the majority of my frags. I managed to get on the scoreboard, as you can see above. Me and Madfox the only HPBs :)

I was proud of the next result. We played on Q3DM1, which, as you can imagine, gets unbelievably crowded. Aiming doesn't come into it. It's just pure instinct and movement. Managed to get halfway up the scoreboard, 11th out of 40 which is nice and last up we played Q3DM7 which also turned out alright. Shame my copy crashed after that, apparently they played Q3DM8. Must have been mad around the plasma gun.

Totally mad near the RL :)

12 February 2000 - Barrysworld Q3 FFA Contest

On Thursday I played in the qualifiers of the FFA contest. These were seeding matches to determine division placings. There was a low turnout on the night. Hopefully this is because people had forgotten or didn't get the mails rather than that they couldn't be bothered. Anyway, it's going to be rock hard, because the vast majority of players are LPB. Doesn't bother me too much though, it was great fun to play in and the attitude was excellent. No one moaned about the late start, due to people not turning up, or us all meeting on one server rather than the three original ones. Also, in-game, people were friendly, no "lag!" comments, and plenty of good-humour. Nice to play in. I did OK really, beat two LPBs so I wasn't last :) One thing I might have to get over is my hate of camping. The HPB, QL-Sol, camped the RL to hell. That's a valid tactic of course but it certainly pushed his score right up. I prefer to run all over the maps doing circuits and visiting every corner. Something to consider I spose. Congrats to [nEo]RangeR for a score that put him well in the lead. There's a screenshot below.

On the site front, I've uploaded four demos (took like an hour with them being so massive) and I'll follow them up soon. Also, I've decided to share as much knowledge as I have on my tips pages. I'm getting to work on that this week. I'm thinking of doing a map and playing guide for newer players, and config/bind tips as I used to do on my old site :)
