March to July 2002 Archive
8 July 2002 - Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall Just to say that I've updated with a couple of links, including Kinky Chicken's excellent new player site and Online Scam, with its hilarious caption competitions.
30 June 2002 - Discotheque Checking out the Scene 3d demos site, I found Discotheque, another amazing 64K demo. This one features some amazing neon lettering effects and floating dancing girls! Once again I'm amazed out how much can be stored in such a small file, but there you go.
The site also has plenty of submissions of recent demos from the Swedish meet that took place recently. If you're interested download Discotheque here and Amoeba's cool too, which is one of the larger submissions, on Scene. You'll need an up-to-date version of Direct X of course but I guess you have that already!
30 June 2002 - Hard Times There's a new demo up of me struggling on a 250 ping but somehow managing to clean up. All the other demos of me losing were somehow corrupted but this one has survived to be released to the public.
30 June 2002 - 24 Twenty-four hours, twenty-four episodes. I'm really enjoying the current series of "24". At first it sounds a mad concept and you wonder how the writers can fill one day with so much action but it's all really believable. The plot unfolds in little snippets which are enough to satisfy your curiosity but leave enough in the dark so you have to watch the next episode. The acting is amazing and there's never been another show that has got so close to its characters and allowed them to develop before your very eyes. Conflict is another essential ingredient of any drama and 24 has it in spades. You don't know who you can trust, everyone's a potential suspect and within his department and his family Jack has lots of conflict to deal with. Eventually you don't notice anymore that things unfold in real-time, it seems natural (as indeed it is), but it is a really unique idea and very refreshing because the tension is building up so slowly but intensely and, for me, it's the only cannot-miss TV program on at the moment. Sadly I'm at pains to find anyone to talk to about it because no one else seems to be watching it! Their loss in my opinion because it's probably the best thing I've seen on TV in ages.
9 June 2002 - Still Got It One small change to the site, making the top title link to the main index and the column button actually link to this page has just taken half an hour to complete. Traditional html sites are pretty rare these days and that's why! Still, if I ever make another site (which won't be any time soon) I'll know better. Maybe when I'm an old giffer I'll write a slick pipe-smoking, dominos and fishing site.
I've added a few new links and culled some of the ones that have died in my absence (quite a few sadly). The only section that's a bit lacking is player sites. There must be more than I have linked. Let me know if any other players have their own sites please. I'm still FFA'ing on Claranet, and enjoying the challenge. I actually won a few last night against a server full of LPB's, which was very nice, and even got accused of cheating even though I was using the excellent Q2Ace. Must be doing something right at last! All the paks and config "cheats" I use are on this site btw :). I've also been trying to catch up on recent events and have seen some good demos along the way. To sum up, purri was the winner of the Nordic Invitational duel event, beating Cedion in the final and winning the prize of a game against the legendary Shub. Unmatched beat Clan Without Frags over three maps in the final of the Clanbase Spring Cup, without losing a single game throughout the competition. XTC have won Division 1 of the Jolt Quake 2 League beating Dream into second. Oh, and Sweden won the first season of the NDML btw. That's the sum of my in-depth research! The demo I've chosen to upload is one of the Clanbase final games between Unmatched and CwF on Q2DM5.
22 May 2002 - Will You Fly, and Fly Away... Quick update to mention I've uploaded a new demo sent in by St0k3d. It's a very unusual grenade jump master class on Q2DM1 and well worth the very quick download!
19 May 2002 - How You Remind Me Well, I'm enjoying playing Quake 2 again, squeezing even more hours out of that £30 I spent four years ago. I half expected the servers to be empty when I came back, but no, I haven't noticed much difference except for the fact that modemers are a very clear minority now and there are loads of broadbanders. I've been playing on Clara mostly and usually get a good game, but I haven't won any matches against good opposition yet, but I'm up there. Unfortunately, my rail fetish never was and still isn't suited to a high ping and I should use the super shotgun more. I haven't recognised very many players, and a lot of the old ones are presumably aliasing or just don't play anymore, which is a shame. I can also see how many players have progressed from six months ago, now topping the scoreboard when back then they were just newbies. I still need to catch up on the scene. All I know is that XTC are Jolt and Savage champs apparently, and CS are now Resistance :). Anyway, I've linked another of 3D-Demos demos, which is a really good deathmatch in which the winner racks up a massive score of 150 on The Frag Pipe. Demos page here.
12 May 2002 - Knock Knock It's been a while, but my computer has now caught up with me and I have permanent access to the internet once again. Sadly, I can't get ISDN or ADSL connected at this house because I'm only renting and I can't be stuck with a 12-month minimum term contract. I didn't used to mind the modem but when you've had ISDN it's quite frustrating going back. Still, the modem's not too bad as long as you don't want to download music or movies, or play competitive online games, or connect in a matter of seconds, or browse graphics intensive sites. It's just as well that none of that appeals to me :/. Quake 2 isn't too bad and, after some early problems with 500-1000 pings it's now settled around 180. STAC compression doesn't seem to be supported by Nildram anymore either, which is annoying. Quake 3 isn't really playable but I may have more luck as I attempt to rediscover my old settings. Having said that, I don't remember ever finding the "perfect" settings. That's something of a Holy Grail when you're on a modem :). I updated with a couple of demos at the beginning of May that may be of interest. The Germany-vs-Sweden one had been downloaded many times from 3D-Demos so that's probably not new to many people but, for sheer class, it belonged in the archive. The other demo is a recam of a Lithium free for all. Other site updates will come as a lot of old links and references are probably now redundant so I'll do my best. Bye for now.
23 March 2002 - Still Offline After some long down time for a lot of my demos, the vast majority are now available again. Until November I was hosting almost every demo on my own space, but since I've lost the space and many of the demos are on 3D-Demos, I've linked the relevant pages there. I've also used SavageDemos to some extent, since anyone can upload their demos there. Finally, I've added two which I spotted along the way that impressed me. That's about it. I'm still offline for now, so the updates won't start to flow again just yet. See you next time. |
