28 October 2001 - Bailamos

Spotted over on Clan XTC's site was a link to this map which is a quality conversion of Quake 3's best map, Q3DM6 for Quake 2. Many of the textures have been lifted directly from the original and, amazingly, the jumppads work perfectly. And who says Quake 2 can't do curves :).

My clan, MKC, took a bit of a drubbing yesterday with an embarrassing 11-0 loss in the Barrysworld RA3 League. I think I'll be happy when we get relegated back to Division 2 to be honest. Doubt I'll have much choice in the decision though ;). Having said that it sometimes seems almost impossible to actually get relegated from a division because clans drop from leagues or fold so that you always stay up, hehe.

An RA3 player called Dizzy was spamming an url for an RA3 movie he'd made so I've checked it out and rated it. It's pretty good but not one of the best, coming in at number 9 :). I'm sure he's got plenty of ideas for the next one, though. I've also put up a short document on the movies page which describes the basics of how to go about creating your own movie. Wouldn't mind a go myself at some point but you need a decent sized hard-drive to hold all the frames while you're compiling it so I'll have to wait for my next computer. I'm waiting for a PC with the latest stuff that won't be obsolete a month later ;).

I've also added a couple of new links. Dizzy's personal site mentioned above, Speedguide with some tips for improving broadband connections (I was a bit reluctant to link that one ;) ), and Quake the Wall, which I never knew about but which has a load of great quality Quake desktops.

The search for more webspace for my demos goes on. I signed up for one of those crappy Geocities accounts but you can't link demos from outside, doh. I was also told about a site called Freedrive but their definition of "free" and mine differ slightly. My definition means no money, their's doesn't :). Anyway, I'm going to use the Geocities job to upload a copy of the old MKC Quake 2 site and link some demos off it. There were also some top secret tactics pages that I'll link up ;).

As is becoming a regular thing on this site I'll mention the close of Competition 3 on Q2Central's Trick Jump Site. This time Toadkilla made runner-up, n1 :). The next competition may well be of interest to a lot of people as it's a freestyle trick jump session on everyone's favourite, The Edge, so everyone has a good chance to show-off.

And finally another Quake 2 demo! This one really impressed me as it's sooo close at the end. Superb play from [FOs]BubkeZ so definitely download and watch it. I insist :).

23 October 2001 - Rug out from under my feet

Could be mistaken but it appears that NBCI have deleted everyone's unlimited storage space and replaced it with the X-Drive thing that you have to pay for. Unfortunately I had a few older demos on there so some of these may be unavailable until I find some new free space to upload them to :(. I've got all my demos juggled around about seven accounts as it is ;). Nice of NBCI to e-mail me, doh.

21 October 2001 - Three Years Old

We were talking in irc yesterday about our online ages, and I realised that I am now 3, having started out in October 1998. How can it possibly be such a short time?! I've had this site for most of that time too, having first created it in June 1999 in Word ;).

I noticed on my Nedstat stats yesterday that some people are actually looking at my Quake 3 config page, so I've updated it to my current config. The other was a year old and this new one is a lot faster and uglier graphics-wise ;). I've also added a couple of good links and tidied up some redundant links too. There's another new movie in the chart too, from German clan Freak Legion. Not one of the greats but some classy play all the same.

If you use irc a lot you may be interested in a cool script. I've always used the Peace and Protection script as it gives a good range of features for channel operators, with protection functions against takeovers, and advanced noticing functions where you can speak to other ops or individuals in the channel, etc. It's a great script anyway and it's finally been updated for mirc 5.91 so get it here.

As you may know, I've relied on Endeffect for most of my desktop images over the last couple of years, but another site has taken it over in terms of the sheer number and quality of wallpaper images available. Deviantart is a very cool site and well worth a good rummage ;). I'm now using Full Frontal by alex4ever, check it out here.

Finally another appeal for demos really. I'll leave larger sites like XTC Central and Demodepot to compete over supplying the largest number of demos ;), but what I've always sought to do on my limited filespace is to assemble a collection of only the greatest demos, so if you see any that really blow you away that I don't have, then tell me about them please, even if they're already on one of the afore-mentioned sites as I will credit you and the demo source. Cheers.

10 October 2001 - Escape

Another pimpage update :). The second set of trick jump competitions are now complete over on Kinky Chicken's Trick Jump Centre site. Check it out for the latest winners. I was once again amazed by the skills of the main winner!

It's changed now so that it isn't just the ultimate winners who get a mention. Everyone who enters and completes challenges will get a score and be added to a roll of honour, which is some real incentive to make an effort. I noticed an MKC'er in the list, MKC*Toadkilla :).

Over on the Nations Deathmatch League site they've announced the teams for some All-stars games between Europe and Scandinavia this weekend. From the selections these promise to be some really amazing games so keep an eye on Demo Central for the demos when they arrive.

7 October 2001 - RA3 Forever

Well, as predicted, induce gave us a bit of a slapping yesterday, but it was a fun game nonetheless. I've written a report over on the MKC site if you're interested (you never know). I've also uploaded some new content to this site, including a new demo, supplied again by demo fiend, Zipgun. It's a real show-off demo that would suit Demodepot's new "poser" category ;). I've added the relaunched Demodepot to the links page but there's also a new link for a South African demo site, Demo Pimp. It's a slow site, but there are some old classics and new Q3 movies available so it's worth an inspection.

I've also reviewed a cool new movie, called RA3-Forever, by the creator of the aYb movie, aYb-Vader. I found it on the German Planetquake site, so check that out for several movies I haven't covered if you're hungry for more.

5 October 2001 - Chema

I've just uploaded two demos from top clan Leading Nordic Team with some fantastic play from [lnt]sqx'. However, whilst I was on their site I spotted a cool map by BubkeZ, called Chema. Clearly influenced by Q2DM7 with some elements of Sewer64 even, this is a really quality map with some imaginative ideas, jumps to master, and an awful lot of slime! It says it's a duel map but I think it's big enough for a clan game personally - it would be very intense.

I've also updated the links page with a couple of new ones and I've redone the Clan Sites Chart seeing as a fair few had changed.

My clan, Massive Killing Capacity, are starting out on a new Barrysworld RA3 League season tomorrow and it's going to be really tough this season. We somehow made it into Division 1 last time ;), so now we have the pleasure of facing induce tomorrow. Other Division 1 clans we will face include Bunk, BX, [D], FURY, MsR, PR, Rv, X and Xe. We will be looking to play our best and get as many rounds as we can and if we win a couple I'll be well chuffed to be honest :). It's hard to predict at this stage but I think induce would be a fair bet on recent performances.

5 October 2001 - Demodepot Mk2

Q2 Central's Demodepot has just relaunched after having been abandoned the first time round. This new site seems nicely put together and it's great to see another Quake 2 demo site launch so soon after XTC's. It proves there's life in the old dog yet ;). DemoDepot already has 200 demos available, many from a WP origin, but with the user upload option this is sure to increase rapidly.

They have a "demo of the week" pak file of demos up at the moment and an interesting category that made me laugh, "posers". Nothing in there yet unfortunately, hehe. Demodepot has some great features, including a cool rating feature as well as the ability to write reviews of demos you've seen. All in all, an excellent demos site and sure to improve a lot over the coming weeks and months.
