March 2001 Archive
29 March 2001 - Polosatiy An update to freshen up this page a bit and highlight the fact that I've uploaded three Q2 demos that may be of interest. One is the latest trick jump demo from Polosatiy, which covers all the maps in the game. The next is a classic duel between Blue and Shub, and finally there's the recent XTC-vs-CoG Wireplay Cup Final, which was a very close match. Incidentally, if you're interested in Polosatiy, one of Europe's top players, then check out his Esports site. Before you leave because it's in Russian, notice that there's a button in the top right to change the language into English :). This looks like a good site to keep an eye on, with demos, updated news, useful links and some columns from top players (none yet but they're in place, hehe). He also has another personal site but this one doesn't have an English button (it's pretty easy to find his demos though). I'm currently looking forward to a game that isn't Quake, or even an FPS for that matter. Black and White has been looking stunning for a long time and it's already got great reviews. Find out more on this community site, or the official site. I just hope my now lowly P2-450 can cope with all that number crunching :). Also, I mentioned Diabolic's CTF demos site in an earlier update but it ended up being taken down by the hosts because its popularity was consuming so much bandwidth! Anyway, Barrysworld have stepped in to host his demos so find the new site with the whole UNR Q2 CTF archive numbering well over a hundred demos here.
29 March 2001 - Q3 Challenge Pro-Mode I've never played this mod but I found the site for it and watched a couple of the demos and it's an amazing game, pretty similar to Rocket Arena in some ways. It's like a kind of super fast version of Quake 3, as if Quake 3 wasn't fast enough :). There are instant weapon switches, and vastly extended air control. I couldn't understand what was going on with the powerups to be honest but you seem to be able to pick up dropped ammo off the opponents when they die. Promode hasn't really taken off in Western Europe as far as I know but it's big in both America and Eastern Europe apparently. Check out the Promode site if you're interested, and download a demo I've converted to 1.27 here (you also need a CPM map). Install both to baseq3 (demos/ and maps/ respectively).
3 March 2001 - Finetime I haven't seen many new demos lately I'm afraid, and I haven't been following the Quake 2 scene to get any :(. I love playing Quake 3 but the demos just don't cut it for me, they all seem the same somehow :o/. One set of Quake 2 demos I did see recently was a pair of duels between HELL and a Czech player. It was the feature of a messageboard debate over whether he's the best in the world now. The skills on show certainly are impressive and in particular the second demo. Find them on my demos page.
On the Quake 3 demo front I would obviously recommend watching the UNR-vs-4K final if you haven't already. UNR won the first match and had a 80 frag difference over 4K. At this point UNR mistakenly thought they could take it easy in the second match and cruise to victory. Unfortunately no one realised (even the admins) that 4K only needed 41 frags over UNR to erode the difference and win. One for is also one against. 4K won the second and took the fourth Barrysworld title in a row! Nightstrike has written an excellent article on the match over on XSReality. Find it here along with demo links. Nightstrike has a page of his own by the way, but he stopped updating it long ago. It's a Quake 2/3 demo site and there may be a few you haven't seen. Some of the demos are on my site of course ;). Also, UNR have finally, and let me repeat that once again, finally, completed their new website. Only took a year ;). Gameloft (part of Lineone) has posted an article about the best FPS games of all time. It's a nice summary of all the main games but unfortunately it stops short (that's my move*) of actually naming the best game. Probably a sensible idea given the way people defend their chosen games to the death ;). And, finally, I was recently blown away by an incredibly small graphics demo (I saw the link on a clan site but I can't remember which unfortunately). It's only 64Kb (it was the winner of a "small demo" competition I believe) but it plays for a good 5 minutes with beautifully rendered graphics and an atmospheric soundtrack. Presumably the textures are created on-the-fly by some kind of fractal/random method. Who am I trying to kid, I haven't got a clue, hehe. To put this miniscule size into perspective remember that Notepad is 52Kb! Get it now and be amazed. Personally I like the eerie floating text that moves through space in the cathedral. Download the file here from the excellent graphics demos site Tranzmit. * Sadly about three people in the UK (including me) actually watch the sitcom Seinfeld so apologies if you don't get that joke :)). |
