12 February 2001 - Just The One

This month I've been mostly browsing these sites:

Quakenation : Still one of the best scene sites, with news, interviews and brilliant league write-ups by Bigfoot. This will be one of the biggest losses if Barrysworld were to go under.

Challenge UK : This site is absolutely dire for news. There's simply no effort at all to post anything really. The only saving grace of late has been a selection of interesting column updates. This was sparked by >Z<Harlequin who posted an interesting summary of the league from his, a Division 1 player's, point of view. He's posted some controversial columns which have generated several comment arguments. It's often very interesting reading. Harlequin's efforts seem to have spurned on other columnists too, and the posting frequency is increasing. Also check out Sky's column where he talks about Division 1 of the RA3 League.

Savage Q2CTF Forum : Unfortunately I made the mistake of reading the dross-filled bickerings on the old UKCCL forum and never bothered with this, a genuinely interesting forum, with, for the most part, intelligent and informed posters. Gasp! The topics on the Q2CTF board in particular are very wide-ranging. With hundreds of new posts every day there's usually something interesting on there.

Other Sites: Just look at the ugly clan members of WeFragU. Doyley in particular cracks me up :)). If you're into Q2CTF at all you may be interested by Diabolic's new CTF demos site [03/03/01 - Link no longer works, the site was so popular that the hosts had to take it down!]. He's uploaded hundreds of megabytes of UNR demos from several members' povs. Finally, some crazy Belgian guy has created a site with loads of screenshots of him pummeling top players, Pummelheaven. That he would go to the trouble of taking the screenshots and creating a site is brilliant, hehe. The spectacle of all those pummels is a site to behold :).

12 February 2001 - Lord of the Rings

OK, not in any way Quake-related, but I found the official site pretty cool, with desktop images of all your favourite Black Riders and the full trailer downloadable in Realplayer format. It's only short but it really does give you a great taster for the film. Personally I can't wait for what's been voted the favourite book of the 20th century to make it, in full, to the silver screen. There was an excellent animated version but the production apparently ran out of money half way so you never actually saw the conclusion, it just kind of wrapped it up in a couple of lines of narrative, hehe. There's no chance of that this time thank goodness. They've actually finished filming all three films one after the other, and we should see the first this year. If you're a fan, check out the site here.

12 February 2001 - Ignoreland

I think I wore myself out with that last 2500 word update :). This last month has seen a lot of changes, the most important of which has been the very public liquidation of Barrysworld. I'm not going to go over old territory with any comments on that, it's been covered to death already! Fortunately it's managed to keep its leagues running and servers up so we haven't been unduly affected.

I now haven't played a game of Quake 2 since before Christmas and I'm not really missing it as much as I thought I would. By concentrating on Quake 3 I am improving a lot faster than before, playing more or less 100% RA3. The main thing I need to address is my playing style. In Quake 2 people frowned on "lame" weapons like the chaingun in RA2, but in RA3 everyone gets out their plasma gun or lightning gun when the opponent has been weakened. To be honest that's always been my greatest weakness as a player, I try to make the kill with the weapon I'm using, even if it's completely inappropriate for the situation :). What can I say, I find it hard to be lame :P~, or maybe that is lame in itself. Anyway, moving swiftly on....

Because I haven't been playing Quake 2 I obviously haven't seen any Quake 2 demos for a while so those have dried up :(. If anyone out there knows any good ones then please mail me because I would like to keep the Quake 2 demo side of the site alive if I can. I have never posted very many Quake 3 demos because there are so many great sites out there with a stack load of great and up-to-date demos. XS Reality and Cached spring to mind. In fact I've realised that all the Quake 3 demos on my site are now redundant and don't work with the new version 1.27h. Doh! I'll convert any decent ones soon and start adding some of the best that I see. Again, mail me if you have any recommendations!
